Building Energy Rating

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) have changed to Qualification Criteria to for a person to become a Registered Non-domestic Building Energy Rating (BER) Assessor. Previously a person had to hold a Level 8 Honours Degree (Route 1) or be a member of the Energy Assessor Accreditation Schemes in the UK (Route 2) in order to sit the entry exams. SEI have decided to discontinue Route 2 and have lowered the Route 1 entry requirement to Level 7 Ordinary Degree. Are these changes a good or bad thing for the industry?

  1. What difference will that make if I want a BER done on my property? Will I get a better rating if the assesor has used route 1 or route 2?

  2. The fact that SEI have discontinued Route 2 would make me suspect that SEI did not have confidence in the assessors who qualified this way. Therefore, we would suspect that they may have felt that these assessors may not have had enough construction experience to provide accurate ratings. Whether that meant the ratings would end up too high or too low. However, you would need to take each assessor on a case by case basis to determine their level of previous construciton experience and their knowledge of Energy Ratings before you engage one to carry out assessments for you.
